Asphalt Stripping

Although not common, there is a condition where asphalt can start to deteriorate entirely. Raveling is an industry term that is one of the worst pavement conditions a home or commercial property owner can deal with. The only real way to take care of it is to replace the asphalt altogether. Another condition, similar to raveling, is asphalt stripping.

What Is Asphalt Stripping?

When your asphalt is stripping, that means it is basically doing the reverse of raveling. The underlayers of asphalt begin to fall apart, affecting the upper layers of the pavement. Technically, the aggregate and binder below the surface begin to separate, which can lead to foundation issues that are very difficult to address. As it progresses, you will see damage to the lower portions of your pavement, like cracks or entire segments missing. Other symptoms include shoving, rutting, and raveling.

What Causes Asphalt Stripping?

The only cause of asphalt stripping is poor water drainage. When there is moisture at the lower layers of asphalt, the aggregate can start to pull apart from the binding that holds it all together. Although sometimes inappropriate mixtures can contribute, the heart of the problem is always water and poor drainage issues.

How Do You Deal with
Asphalt Stripping?

Because asphalt stripping happens deep below the pavement surface, asphalt stripping is often hard to identify until it is severely damaged. Only a professional has the industry expertise and knowledge to know what to look for and how to diagnose the problem. A core can sometimes provide enough access through the entire width, and the pavement will need to be reinstalled to eliminate the moisture damage. Then, you have to tackle the conditions that led to asphalt stripping directly so it won’t happen again.
